I don’t know why, but this video of Taika Waititi reading a letter sent in response to a ticket (Infringement notice in New Zealand, which sounds much nicer…) made me think of the issue of misguided faith in long term planning by “experts” or “managers” in software.
The premise is absurd, that you can plan most of this stuff, that the planning is worth the lost opportunity to build and experiment, yet many will double down on the absurd premise. The solution is to plan harder, specialize more. They double down on the failure,externalize the problem and repeat.
Perhaps we should just “let this one go” and focus on building.
